Understanding Usage and Permissions
licenses outline the lengths and limits of your permissions to use these materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is attribution required?
We do not require attribution once a license has been purchased, but we do appreciate it! Here are a couple of examples of attribution lines you might choose to use:

Is there a difference between the Basic and Extra Use Licensed materials?
No difference in content! Same materials, just a different set of permissions for use.

What is a commercial service?
A commercial service might include doula support, placenta encapsulation, childbirth education, lactation support, etc. — it is any service that the business owner is paid by a client to provide. Trainings (ex. doula training classes or seminars) are also commercial services.

What is a volunteer service?
A volunteer service might also include doula support, placenta encapsulation, childbirth education, lactation support, etc. — the difference is that the business owner is not paid by a client to provide the service. We recognize that some volunteer organizations offer stipends to their volunteers. That doesn’t disqualify anyone from this designation. This designation exists because we want to be sure that The Educated Birth materials are accessible to professionals who provide services to parents and families who often cannot afford to pay for them.

Do birth, postpartum, and abortion doula support count as separate services? Nope! We consider the full-spectrum of doula support — fertility, birth, postpartum, abortion, and loss — one service.

I offer more than one service, but all of them are voluntary. Do I need the Extra Use License? If all of your services are voluntary, or if only one of your services is paid and all the rest are voluntary, you may use the Basic Use License. If that changes down the road, however, note that you will need to upgrade to the Extra Use License.

Can I print my digital materials?
Yes! We even have a guide for how to do that! Prints may be used with your clients.

What are the limits to using these materials?
The following uses are NOT allowed:

  • reselling these materials on their own or in any kind of packet, book, booklet, etc.

  • sending digital or print copies to other professionals who do not own a license to use them in their businesses (see q+a about including the materials in trainings, below).

  • using these materials under the wrong license type and/or not upgrading your license when applicable (ex. purchasing a basic use license while using the materials as a part of several services, or starting out with a basic use license, upgrading the number of services, but not upgrading your license)

When I purchased from The Educated Birth the options were Standard and Extended. Is this the same as Basic and Extra?
Yep! The language has shifted for simplicity and clarity's sake. If you have any questions about this, just contact us via hello@theeducatedbirth.com.

If I purchase a Basic License now, can I upgrade to an Extra Use License later?
Yes! We will offer you a discount code that will subtract the cost of a Basic Use License from the Extra Use License for the relevant material(s). You'll pay the difference and you'll have the receipt that says you've purchased the Extra Use permissions.

Does the Extra Use License allow me to use the materials I purchased in a product I have created to sell (ex. manual)?
No. The Extra Use License does not allow you to place materials you have purchased in a new product you are offering for sale.

Ex. In a training course, you MAY provide participants with The Educated Birth materials as a resource included in the training, but you MAY NOT place these materials in a manual you are offering to sell to participants.

I'm a birth worker with my own business and I partner with a group, as well. Can I use my purchased The Educated Birth materials with clients in both spaces?
Materials can be used by one person with one business at a time. If you're using the infographic sheets with another group in addition to your own business, that other group will need to purchase license(s) as well. The only exception to this is membership to our content library. Multiple users may access the content library, depending on the type of subscription that has been purchased. See details via this link.

We're a group of birth workers! A collective, a nonprofit, a birth center or any other organizational structure. What license option applies to us? Are discounts offered for groups?
So glad you're interested in using The Educated Birth materials with your community! To do so, your organization will either purchase multiple licenses for the materials or subscribe to our content library. There is an application process for either option.

If I've purchased an Extra Use License to include in my training with other birth workers, can they use the products I provided them?
Licenses are not transferrable. When using The Educated Birth materials in trainings with other professionals, it’s most fitting to frame this gift as, "Here are some examples of resources you can invest in for your own reproductive work practice." Any individual using the materials needs to own a license to do so.

How To Access and Use Your Digital Purchase

Most digital items in The Educated Birth Shop are put together in an organized ZIP file.* Read below to learn more about how to get your use out of them!

Opening Your ZIP File

How to open your ZIP file:
•  Double-click
•  Right-click and select “Extract all” or “Open”

A normal folder file will appear in the same location as the ZIP folder and allow you to see all contents inside.

What's Inside Your ZIP File

If you've purchased an infographic sheet you'll find the following array of file types in your zip file:
•  PNG
•  JPG
•  PDF

If you've purchased an illustration set you'll find the following array of file types in your zip file:
•  PNG
•  JPG
•  EPS

PNG files and JPG files are created for basic digital use, particularly when a small file size is needed. These are great if you want to send an example in an email attachment or a Word Document.

PDF files can be used for digital and print use. But obviously the files labeled Printers Marks and Printer Friendly are meant for printing specifically.

EPS files are best for all variations of digital use. Make it smaller or larger and it will keep its quality. Great for if you want to use it in social media or in a powerpoint presentation!

*A few digital items in the shop will not come in a ZIP File. Those are likely to be PDFs.

How to Get Your Digital Materials Printed

So you have your infographic sheets and now you want to get them printed! No problem! Here are some simple steps for getting there.

Understanding Your PDF Options

Inside your infographic sheet ZIP file, you'll find a folder of PDFs with the following variations inside:
•  Base
•  Printers Marks
•  Printer Friendly

The Base version of your infographic sheet is meant for digital use. If you try to print this version, it's likely to have some sort of quality issue, particularly pertaining to the margins.

The Printers Marks version of your infographic sheet is meant for printing through a service like the ones laid out in the section below, particularly services that will be able to print your project with full bleeds and trim to the edges.

The Printer Friendly Version of your infographic sheet is a color-light version meant for printing at home or in your office. It most easily translates into grayscale printing and doesn't require a bleed.

Printing items an Illustration Set

If you’re printing from an Illustration Set, you’ll have to put your print document together before placing a print order. I’d highly recommend using a platform like Canva to do so.

Inside your illustration set ZIP file, you'll find a folder of EPS files.

EPS files are best for all variations of digital and print use. You can place an .EPS file in a Word Document or upload it into a Canva file, etc. You can make it smaller or larger and it will keep its quality.

If for some reason you cannot upload an EPS file, a JPG or PNG file will work fine as well for most standard size print documents.

Who and How Much?

The cost of printing can really vary depending upon who you're printing through. I suggest pricing out a few options in your area before getting the job done!

Print online through an online service: Online printing services like Vistaprint make it really easy for you to upload your files and get them shipped to you. You can use any of the PDF versions with this option. You may have to pay shipping fees.

At the time that I'm writing this, 25 copies cost $19.00 through Vistaprint.

Print in your area through a service like Office Depot: Places like Office Depot often provide both online and walk-in options for printing. Talk to them about using the Printers Marks version and customizing your project to print to the edge/bleed.

At the time that I'm writing this, 25 copies cost $10.50 through Office Depot.

Print in your area through a small, local print shop: This is my preferred option in terms of cost, quality, and customer service! They usually have online forms, or you can call to place an order. They will definitely prefer the Printers Marks Version.

At the time that I'm writing this, my local print shop has charged about $0.50 per print, depending on the quantity that I have ordered (larger orders lower the rate). At that rate, 25 copies cost about $12.50 through my local print shop.

Please remember as you’re considering what you’d like to print and how you’d like to use your prints that The Educated Birth license options do not allow for re-sale.
