MAY 2021 | THE HISTORY OF OBSTETRIC RACISM
Dána-Ain Davis has been engaged in social justice — and reproductive justice work for the last 30 years. She’s written the articles, the books, given the talks, and won awards as a result. Much of her recent work has consisted of listening to Black birthing peoples’ stories and examining the role that race plays in our reproductive health experiences within the medical system — historically and very much still today. And asking, what radical work do we need to do to make the difference we need? A workshop with Dána-ain Davis @danaaindavis exploring: What is medical racism? What role does medical racism play in outcomes for Black women + pregnant people in the US? What strategies have shown effective in combatting this problem? What can reproductive health workers + parents do about it? Centering Black birthing peoples' narratives.

SEPTEMBER 2021 | INDIGENOUS TRADITIONS IN BIRTH, THE REBOZO + BEYOND Montse Olmos (she/her) and Mayte Acolt (she/her) are Totonaca Indigenous birth companions and migrants in the United States. Mayte is a traditional Sobadora since age seven, taught by her Abuelita and mentored by elders in Hueseria and Yerberia. Montse was raised by her family elders who practiced herbal medicine, Sobadas and energetic healing. They share about the history of the Rebozo from an Indigenous perspective, connecting it to the work of anti-racism, Indigenous liberation and becoming an accomplice to historically oppressed communities. Mayte and Montse began a movement in March 2021 to remove Rebozo birth techniques from doula training organization in the U.S., as a result of the excessive and inappropriate use of this sacred textile. They conduct this work with genuine concern for the commercialization and dilution of the Rebozo and propose that extensive mentorship and hands-on learning from expert Elders is necessary in order to practice Rebozo body-work in an ethical way.

NOVEMBER 2021 | DESTIGMATIZING ABORTION THROUGH DOCUMENTARY ZINES The Abortion Project @theabortionproject was born of two full spectrum doulas who recognized there was a lack of transparency surrounding medical abortions in the United States. After a number of conversations, Heather and Sarah decided to embark on a photography project in August 2019, their desire being to demystify and destigmatize the subject.  By documenting people as they have their abortions and showing what the process can actually look like, they know that others will become more familiar and less fearful or ashamed of their own experiences. T.A.P. has been collecting a variety of experiences from a variety of locations, and has started a series of zines to depict the stories of their participants. These zines help to dispel the deep misconceptions Americans have about abortion that were created through pop culture, antiquated ideas of “back alley” care, and frightening graphics used by anti-abortion groups in communities across the country.

They work to strategically shift the stigma around abortion in our culture and are committed to fostering open and honest conversations, lifting up all communities, and transforming the abortion care environment.
